Dry, burning, gritty, or irritated eyes can make everything from working on a computer to wearing contact lenses uncomfortable. While lubricating eye drops may provide temporary relief, chronic dry eye often requires a closer look at what is causing the problem.
At Brighton Eye Care, we take a personalized approach to dry eye treatment. By evaluating your eyes and tear film, we can recommend treatments that address the factors contributing to your symptoms instead of relying on eye drops alone.
Healthy tears contain a careful balance of water, oil, and other components that keep the surface of the eye comfortable. One common cause of chronic dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. When the oil-producing glands along the eyelids become blocked or function poorly, tears can evaporate too quickly.
Dry eye symptoms may include:
• Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
• Redness or irritated eyes
• Fluctuating or blurry vision
• Watery eyes caused by irritation
• Discomfort when wearing contact lenses
• Eye fatigue or sensitivity
Identifying the underlying cause helps us determine which dry eye treatment may be most appropriate.
For certain patients with dry eye related to MGD, we offer OptiLight by Lumenis. OptiLight uses intense pulsed light, or IPL, applied to the area below the eyes as part of dry eye management.
This non-invasive treatment is designed to address factors associated with inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction. OptiLight IPL may help improve the environment around the eyelids and support healthier tear film function. It is the first FDA-approved IPL treatment specifically designed for dry eye management. Because dry eye varies from patient to patient, we first evaluate your symptoms and eye health to determine whether OptiLight is appropriate for you.
Advanced dry eye care may involve more than one therapy. At Brighton Eye Care, treatment recommendations are based on what we find during your examination.
BlephEx can gently exfoliate the eyelid margins to remove bacteria, debris, and biofilm associated with blepharitis and eyelid inflammation. We also offer Optivize, an in-office treatment designed to help address obstructive material affecting the eyelids and meibomian glands. Depending on your needs, we may also recommend over-the-counter or prescription therapeutic eye drops as part of a broader treatment plan.
Persistent dry eye should not automatically mean using more drops more often. A thorough evaluation can help us identify whether MGD, eyelid inflammation, environmental factors, medications, or other issues are contributing to your symptoms.
